Woman loses bid to get support from ex-fiancé after two lengthy splits February 2019

Dublin solicitor Keith Walsh, chair of the Law Society of Ireland’s child and family law committee, writes for Irish Legal News on the government’s announcement of a divorce referendum in May 2019. The confirmation by Ministers Flanagan and Madigan that the referendum to reduce the waiting time for divorce is to go ahead at the end of May 2019 finally brings Irish divorce law into the 21st century and marks a very humane approach to this complex area of law.

Keith was on Newstalk to discuss the new Divorce referendum in May 2019 with Pat Kenny. The referendum proposal is a reduction in waiting time for Divorce from 4 to 2 years. Currently married couples must be living 4 out of previous 5 years apart before they can start the Divorce procedure. In Keith's opinion, this is too long. Minister Josepha Madigan was very quick to get the ball rolling!
